Meet Tony Powers
Your City of Decatur Commissioner-At-Large
Tony Powers is a native of Decatur, growing up in Oakhurst, where his mother still lives. While attending Decatur High School he played baseball, football and was cadet battalion commander of the JROTC. He met his wife of 26 years, Leisa, at Decatur High School. Tony and Leisa have two daughters, Diondra and Alexandra, who also graduated from Decatur city schools. The Powers have lived in the Great Lakes Neighborhood since 2002, and before that in Oakhurst.
Tony received his Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from the University of Georgia. While there, he joined Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, starting him down the road of community service and civic involvement. Tony worked his way through college at the well known Intown Ace Hardware on Scott Blvd, eventually becoming co-owner of that Decatur landmark, now celebrating their 30th year in business.
Tony’s belief in community service has led to numerous volunteer commitments, both in civic and educational endeavors. Whether it is serving as the President of the Oakhurst Elementary PTA, to being a founding board member of the Decatur Education Foundation, later chairing that same organization, or serving on the Planning Commission, also eventually becoming Chair, Tony’s devotion to his community is unparalleled.
The people of Decatur showed their support for Tony in 2015 by electing him to be their City Commissioner At-Large by an overwhelming margin of more than 87% of the vote. In 2018, he was elected Mayor Pro-Tem by his fellow commissioners.
Tony Power’s willingness to continue to serve as your Decatur City Commissioner At-Large, once again shows his dedication to the City of Decatur and he humbly asks for your vote on November 5th.
