Meet Tony Powers

Your City of Decatur Commissioner-At-Large

Tony Powers is a native of Decatur, growing up in Oakhurst, where his mother still lives. While attending Decatur High School he played baseball, football and was cadet battalion commander of the JROTC. He met his wife of 26 years, Leisa, at Decatur High School. Tony and Leisa have two daughters, Diondra and Alexandra, who also graduated from Decatur city schools. The Powers have lived in the Great Lakes Neighborhood since 2002, and before that in Oakhurst.

Tony received his Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from the University of Georgia. While there, he joined Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, starting him down the road of community service and civic involvement. Tony worked his way through college at the well known Intown Ace Hardware on Scott Blvd, eventually becoming co-owner of that Decatur landmark, now celebrating their 30th year in business.

Tony’s belief in community service has led to numerous volunteer commitments, both in civic and educational endeavors. Whether it is serving as the President of the Oakhurst Elementary PTA, to being a founding board member of the Decatur Education Foundation, later chairing that same organization, or serving on the Planning Commission, also eventually becoming Chair, Tony’s devotion to his community is unparalleled.

The people of Decatur showed their support for Tony in 2015 by electing him to be their City Commissioner At-Large by an overwhelming margin of more than 87% of the vote. In 2018, he was elected Mayor Pro-Tem by his fellow commissioners.

Tony Power’s willingness to continue to serve as your Decatur City Commissioner At-Large, once again shows his dedication to the City of Decatur and he humbly asks for your vote on November 5th.

Tony’s Priorities

Improving our city, strengthening our community.

Our Schools

Decatur’s schools are rated some of the best in the state of Georgia. Whether it was serving on the reconfiguration task force or as Chair of the Decatur Education Foundation, I have worked very hard over the years to make our schools the best they can be.

I pledge to continue my support as your voice on the city commission, working with our school board to insure a lasting and thriving education system, improving all aspects of what we have already built.

Sound Economics

The more we grow our downtown tax base, the more opportunities we have to reduce the tax burden on single family neighborhoods. Our vision to create a downtown neighborhood — one we’ve adhered to for over 30 years — has paid off to the tune of over 1.2 million dollars per year in school funding. As a small business owner, I can appreciate the need for fiscal discipline and building value to maximize what is earned.

My goal as your commissioner is to be a good steward of your money, continuing to cultivate and manage the city’s revenues and the opportunities they present, while doing my best to reduce the tax burden on homeowners.

City Government

Decatur’s elected officials listened to the citizens over the years and the proof is the success of the plans put in place decades ago creating the vibrant and robust city center and neighborhoods that we all enjoy. Our city is envied and emulated by communities throughout the southeast.

There is always room for positive change and if re-elected, I will continue to support and build upon Decatur’s strategic plans.

The People of Decatur

I started out in business in 1985 as a part time associate at Intown Ace Hardware on Scott Blvd, eventually becoming co-owner in 1996. During all my years working with the people of Decatur, I have learned that the residents of our great city are the very best of the best. Everyday I come to work is a joy because I know I will hear “Hey Tony, how’s it goin?” “Hey Tony, can you help me with this problem with my door, my faucet, my grill?” I have gotten to know so many of you, becoming friends in the process.

Whether it is in business or when serving on the Planning Commission, or the Decatur Education Foundation, I love helping people. I plan to continue helping all the residents of Decatur if re-elected to the Decatur City Commission. I ask for your vote on November 5th.
